In the beginning…
John 1 begins with 3 very powerful words…”In the beginning.” These words remind us of the very beginning of all of Scripture. In Genesis 1, these 3 powerful words demand attention. They show that all things are created by God. There was a time when there was no earth; there was nothing. God spoke the world into existence and everything came into being. John wants his readers to remember this very truth. In fact, he wants us to know that the Word was active in the Creation of the world. We clearly see this as the Father says, “Let US make man in OUR image, after OUR likeness.” The Father is speaking to the Son/Word and the Spirit as He forms man. The Word is co-eternal with God the Father. He is not the Father, because he was “with God” the Father. But he is equally God with God the Father because “the Word was God.” Christ was, is and will always be. John then goes on to tell us in verse 14, “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” The Word is Christ who came to earth as a helpless babe to give His life as a ransom to many (Mark 10:45).
The Word was God…
In a time when many would not accept that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, John is clearly showing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, 2ndmember of the Trinity, fully God not created. It was through the Word/Christ that all things were made, and He is the One who brings life. 2000 years later nothing has changed. Jesus Christ is still God and the One who brings life both physical and spiritual. It is Christ who offered His life for those who would die and go to hell. Only God Himself, the One who is sinless and perfect, could atone for the sins of the unrighteous who deserve death. This is why John when seeing Christ says, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
The Word took on flesh…
This Christmas season may we remember that Christ, God Himself, came to the world to save sinners. Sinners just like us! Hallelujah that “God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were sinners, Christ died for us!” (Romans 5:8)
